The Ocean Reset: How to Plan a Team Day on the Orange County Coast
Merlin Mac
Every team hits a point where the calendar is full, the inbox never empties and the group chat never sleeps. Another meeting won't fix that. What usually helps is a full day somewhere else: no laptops, no slide decks, just salt air and something new to try together.
We call it the ocean reset. It's one of the most popular ways companies use us, and it's easy to plan once you know the pieces. Here's how we put one together on the Orange County coast.
Why a reset day works
We're not going to claim the ocean is a cure for anything. What we can tell you, from years of running these days, is what we see happen.
- Phones go away on their own. Nobody checks Slack while balancing on a surfboard or steering a kayak.
- Everyone starts at zero. Most people are new to surfing or paddling, so the org chart fades and people help each other.
- The day has a story. "Remember when the whole team caught that wave?" lasts a lot longer than any offsite agenda.
- People leave with energy, not exhaustion. A morning outside followed by a good lunch is a very different kind of tired than a day of sessions.
That's the whole idea: give people a real break from constant input, and a shared experience to bring back to work.
What an ocean reset day looks like
Most reset days follow a simple three-part rhythm. We adjust it for your group, your schedule and the conditions.
1. Ease in
Start slow. Many groups open with a wellness add-on such as sunrise yoga on the sand, a sound bath or breathwork, so everyone arrives in the day and not still in their inbox. Ask us which wellness options fit your schedule.
2. Get in the water
This is the centerpiece. Choose the activity that fits your team:
- Surf lessons: instructors start on the sand with the basics, then coach your team in the whitewater. Ideal when you want big cheers and shared wins.
- Kayaking: guides lead groups on calm harbor water, which makes it great for teams that want an easy pace and room to talk.
- Stand-up paddleboarding: a focused balance challenge on flat water that gets everyone laughing.
- Duffy electric boats: for groups that would rather stay dry, a relaxed harbor cruise in Newport.
3. Refuel together
End on land with a meal. Many groups follow a morning on the water with one of our food tours or a beer tour, or keep it simple with lunch somewhere with a view. If your team would rather keep moving, a guided hike makes a strong afternoon.

Choosing your coastline
Each of our coastal towns sets a different tone for a reset day:
- Dana Point: a protected harbor that's ideal for first-time kayakers and paddleboarders.
- Laguna Beach: cove beaches, a creative village and surf culture to match.
- Newport Beach: harbor channels, Duffy boats and easy paddling.
- Huntington Beach: Surf City USA, built for a classic team surf day.
- San Clemente: a laid-back surf town with food and beer tours on land.
- San Juan Capistrano: a few minutes inland, for a historic, food-focused afternoon after a morning at the coast.
Tips for planning a reset day that sticks
- Protect the time. Tell the team in advance that this is a no-laptop day, and mean it.
- Book the morning. Earlier sessions often mean calmer water and a fresher group.
- Offer options. Pair a water activity with a land choice so everyone joins at their comfort level.
- Don't over-schedule. Leave space between activities. The unplanned conversations are often the best part.
- Let us handle logistics. We take care of the guides, gear and planning, so you can actually take part.
Book your team's ocean reset
You don't need a big agenda to bring a team back to center. A morning on the water, a meal together and a day away from screens go a long way.
