Why Water Works: Team Building on the Orange County Coast
Merlin Mac
We've run team days on the Orange County coast for years, and one pattern keeps showing up. The groups that connect best aren't always the ones with the most polished agenda. They're the ones who got wet together.
Put a sales team on surfboards, or a finance department in tandem kayaks, and something shifts. People who barely speak in meetings are cheering each other on by the second wave. Here's why we think it works, and how to plan a water day of your own.
Doing together beats sitting together
A lot of team building asks people to perform: introduce yourself, share a fun fact, present to the group. That's fine for some people, and draining for plenty of others.
On the water, the focus is somewhere else:
Everyone has the same job. Catch the wave, keep the kayak straight, stay on the board. Nobody has to be "on."
Titles disappear. On a surfboard the CEO is a beginner like everyone else, and that does more for team dynamics than any icebreaker.
Conversation shows up on its own. The best talks we overhear happen while groups float between sets or paddle back to the dock.
Team building on the water isn't therapy, and we don't pretend it is. It is one of the simplest ways we know to give people a shared experience they'll still talk about months later.
Water-based team building in Orange County
Our coast has calm harbors for first-timers and beginner-friendly beach breaks for teams who want a challenge. Here's what we run.
Surf lessons
Our surf instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid. Every lesson starts on the sand, then moves into the whitewater with a 1:3 instructor-to-student ratio. Boards and wetsuits are included, and lessons run one to two hours. For a lot of teams, this is the activity they talk about for years. Surf lessons
Kayaking
Kayaking is ideal for teams that want calm water and easy conversation. After a short orientation, guides lead groups through Dana Point Harbor or Newport's Back Bay at a 1:6 ratio. Tours take about two hours. Kayak tours
Stand-up paddleboarding
SUP sits in the middle. It takes enough balance to keep everyone focused and is calm enough to talk while you paddle. Sessions run one to two hours with a 1:4 ratio and can be expanded to include SUP yoga or a small water meditation. Stand-up paddleboard
Electric boat outings in Newport
For a team that wants the water without getting wet, a Duffy electric boat cruise around Newport Harbor keeps everyone together and relaxed. Private tours include a guide/driver who is sharing the history of the harbor, charcuterie and wine. Duffy boat tours
Where to go
Each of our coastal towns has its own personality:
Dana Point: protected harbor water, ideal for first-time kayakers and paddleboarders.
Laguna Beach: cove beaches and deep surf culture.
Newport Beach: harbor channels, Duffy boats and paddling.
Huntington Beach: Surf City USA, made for a classic group surf day.
San Clemente: laid-back surf, with food and beer tours on land.

Tips for a water day everyone enjoys
Offer choices. Pair surfing with kayaking or a land activity so everyone finds their comfort zone.
Leave room to breathe. Unstructured time is where teams bond, so don't schedule every minute.
Go early. Morning sessions often mean calmer water and a fresher group.
Add a wellness block. Yoga, breathwork or a cold plunge pairs naturally with a paddle. Ask us about wellness add-ons.
Eat together afterward. Many of our groups follow a session with a food tour or a beer tour.
Bring your team to the water
You don't need a perfect agenda to bring a team closer. Give them a shared challenge, an ocean view and a few hours away from their screens, and they'll handle the rest. We'll take care of the gear, guides and logistics.
